Yahoo’s Spanish Site and NBCU’s Telemundo.com To Merge; Share Ad Revs

By Rafat Ali - Tue 09 May 2006 09:06 PM PST

Yahoo’s Spanish language site in U.S. amd Telemundo.com, the website for NBC UNiversal-owned TV network Telemundo, are merging to form a joint site, and will share advertising revenues. The new site is called Yahoo! Telemundo.
Executives from Yahoo and NBC Universal described the tie-up as a “test bed” for other possible future deals between the two companies, which they declined to specify. The tie-up is similar to what Yahoo did in Australia late last year, merging its site with Seven Network there.
For Yahoo, the tie-up provides exclusive access to some Spanish-language content and video online, and also boosts Yahoo’s efforts to sell advertising targeted at Hispanics. NBC Universal hopes the partnership will boost Telemundo’s ratings, which have been improving lately but still trail rival Univision by a huge margin.
Univision’s site is arguably the biggest Hispanic site in U.S. and this move will go a long way to compete in the U.S. Hispanic language market. Other in the sector are Terra, owned by Spain’s Telefonica SA and Microsoft MSN Latino. The Yahoo’s spanish language site is big already with Hispanics in U.S.
