We’ll have more on this but just got off the phone with Atom Entertainment CEO Mika Salmi, who confirmed a WSJ report that Viacom is acquiring the company for $200 million. The deal was signed today and should close within the next few months. Salmi said he will stay on as CEO and that Atom will be part of MTV Networks. More to come.
Update: The acquisition covers a lot of ground for Viacom including short-form video, free and subscription casual gaming, in-game advertising, high-traffic directories, viral video. Known as AtomShockwave until this past January, Atom Entertainment was formed in 2001 by the merger of Atom and Shockwave.com. The company acquired online game directory AddictingGames.com last November and launched AddictingClips.com as a directory of web video earlier this year. AddictingClips added mobile and PC upload features in March and pays $250 for the most popular uploads.
