UK’s Times Online Aiming To Overtake Guardian’s Audience

By Jemima Kiss - Fri 01 Sep 2006 12:11 PM PST

Some News International snippets in this MediaGuardian interview with Les Hinton, Murdoch’s “special envoy on earth” - otherwise known as executive chairman.
The old MySun community site rumour is hinted at again, though the whole idea was denied quite emphatically at the time. This report says it won’t duplicate what would be its sister site MySpace.
Hinton also said Times Online aims to overtake Guardian Unlimited in online readership and said here “it will do so in the foreseeable future."  How close is it? ABCEs show growth in uniques as follows:
guardian.co.uk: 8.2 million June 2004 -> 11.2 million July 2005 -> 13.1 million July 2006
timesonline.co.uk: 1.7 million April 2004 -> 6.3 million July 2005 -> 8.5 million July 2006
He also said he expects Times Online to become profitable in the same timeframe; The Times and Sunday Times lost $84 million in the year ending July 2005.
