The New Look Guardian Launches Today; Digital Edition Free Online

By Rafat Ali - Sun 11 Sep 2005 08:11 PM PST

guardiannew1.gifThe Guardian is launching in a new, smaller print format (called ”The Berliner”) in UK today, and the editors are blogging the experience. Plus the digital edition of the newspaper is being offered free today, for readers to get a taste.

As for the website, nothing much is changing, as this post says.
But, as Emily Bell writes, the site is launching some new editorial features. It has launched some online community features which will find a place in the print version...the travel section has started one such feature.

In this companion story on the new launch, Guardian editor and CEO admit that the site isn’t making much money as of now (of course, that’s compared to the print revenues). Says Carolyn McCall, CEO of Guardian Newspapers: “We are trying to be the best ever newspaper and the best ever website, but it is still too early to see exactly how the website will be a big revenue earner. But we will keep investing in it, because at some stage it will make money, and there are all sorts of ways of doing that, including, in some circumstances, charging for content.”
