Korean Regulatory Issues For IPTV Solved; New Launches Expected

By Rafat Ali - Mon 24 Jul 2006 10:08 AM PST

South Korean regulators have resolved a long-standing dispute over IPTV, over who should regulate/oversee it...The Korean Broadcasting Commission and the Ministry of Information & Communication each had claimed the right to regulate it, but now they have agreed share oversight of IPTV operations, with a joint steering committee set up to create a regulatory framework.
The broadcasting commission had argued that IPTV be regulated as digital cable TV services, while the ministry insisted that IPTV be considered as an extension of telecom or “broadband convergence services”.
Telecom giant Korea Telecom is eager to enter the market, as it competitor Hanaro Telecom...in fact Hanaro already launched a broadband TV service today (Hana TV offers movies, soap operas and educational programs through its broadband network, via a TV set top box)
Korea Times: The ministry will come up with new measures to operate the test operations of the IPTV services, separately, from the scheduled trial performance of the government-led project of the broadband convergence network (BcN). The word BcN refers to the next-generation network that integrates telecom, Internet and broadcasting pipelines into a single line.
