Guardian’s Global Ambitions; Biggest Liberal Voice Worldwide

By Rafat Ali - Tue 06 Jun 2006 04:07 PM PST

Guardian’s global ambitions haven’t been hidden, but UK rival Times stole some of the limelight last week when they announced launching of a daily print edition in U.S. Now Carolyn McCall, the Guardian Newspapers, said yesterday in a speech at the big World Newspaper Congress in Moscow that it plans to expand its print and online presence in America as part of its ambition to become the biggest liberal voice in world media.
“We will be announcing quite soon our plans for America, which will include expanding on the web, signing up people in the States, and we are also going to do print,” McCall said. “The opportunity is for the Guardian to reflect what the world is saying about America but also to bring [blogging website] Comment is Free into America so that you can get an engaged discussion on things that interest America in an intellectual and intelligent way.”
The company is selling advertising in U.S. and using online to target readers geographically.
