European Open Up Olympics Coverage Online & On Mobiles

By Rafat Ali - Thu 19 Aug 2004 01:09 AM PST

Why can’t U.S.? Yeah, yeah..I know the reasons. Rights, DRM, blah, blah, blase, blase.

It’s ain’t easy, I know, but we could have tried better…

Anyway, the European Broadcasting Union has revealed some details of its initiatives to open up the games online and on mobiles. Broadcasters showing broadband content in Europe include ARD and ZDF (Germany); DR (Denmark); DRS, TSR and TSI (Switzerland); ERT (Greece); SVT (Sweden), BBC (United Kingdom), NPB (Netherlands) NRK (Norway) and CanalPlus (France). Four days into the Games and broadband Internet users in over 30 European countries have experienced moving image services.

In addition to broadcaster WAP sites, a number of European mobile operators are offering moving image content packages in Slovenia, the United
Kingdom, Slovakia, Poland, Switzerland, Spain and Italy. Moving image Olympic content is also available over the latest generation 3G networks, notably in Denmark, Sweden and Greece.

EBU is using the latest geo-location and DRM technologies to protect the content...what prevented us from offering broadband content online, and at the same time protecting rights? Stasis, money, and greed…
