Could Small Screens Spawn A Big Business For Adult Content? (reg. req.)

By Staci D. Kramer - Tue 15 Nov 2005 07:12 AM PST

Mobile phones and p*rn already bring in millions of dollars but, sparked by the new Video iPods, non-phone portables are taking center stage. The Washington Post compares the time it took for Apple to hit 1 million video downloads from iTunes—20 days—with the week it took for the SuicideGirls to hit the same number for free video downloads. It’s not an entirely comparable number; for instance, iTunes sells downloads and SuicideGirls was giving away n*de model videos. How long would it have taken the latter to hit 1 million if it was charging?
Not everyone sees the allure but Wired News s*x columnist Regina Lynn says she’s changed her mind about it being a novelty. “I think that the p8rn industry will probably be pretty quick to figure out what works and sells for mobile devices.”
In the U.S., making money from p*rn requires an end run around the carriers, who are uncomfortable with direct delivery and I don’t see that changing any time soon. It’s not just carriers—ITunes won’t carry the SuicideGirls adult videos.
