Amazon is the sole investor in Wikia’s second round; amount undisclosed. It’s a shift from the crowd that invested in the$4 million first round earlier this year from a group including angel investors, Bessemer Venture Partners and Omidyar Network. Wikia is the for-profit community wiki company from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, who is chairman. In the release, Amazon Chairman Jeff Bezos explained the investment: “We want to support the continued growth of sites like Wikia, which has cracked the code for user-generated content.” Wales said Wikia will use the funding to expand internationally and to expand topics covered.
VentureBeat: “Part of Wikia’s round (amount undisclosed) includes the purchase of the sports community site, ArmchairGM for more than $2 million, underscoring how Wikia is having to reach out to acquire talent and technology. Wikia says it will use the ArmChairGM technology to help it incorporate user-generated news and voting into future Wikia fan sites. ... ArmchairGM’s four founders, Dan Lewis, Aaron Wright, David Pean, and Rob Lefkowitz, will join Wikia as full time employees and will continue to run ArmchairGM independently.”
