Ontario Public Ed Channel TVO Will Share Online Programming For Parents With Yahoo Canada

By David Kaplan - Tue 25 Mar 2008 11:09 AM PST

Canadian public education broadcaster TVO has struck a programming and production deal with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Canada. Kind of a government-run Canadian PBS, TVO says this is the first time it’s made its editorial and video content available for an outside online outlet. Citing comScore (NSDQ: SCOR) data, TVO, which has an average of 500,000 monthly uniques across its sites, was particularly interested in tapping Yahoo Canada’s 16.5 million monthly users.

Since its inception 35 years ago, TVO, which is operated by the Ontario Ministry of Education, has mainly concentrated its cable and broadcast programming for Ontario residents. The Yahoo deal helps bring the brand to the rest of the country. Initially, the deal covers only material from TVOParents.com, which has been in beta since last spring. TVO has another site, TVOKids.com, TVOParents.com, which has games and a range of interactive children’s features. Under the terms of the deal, TVO and Yahoo Canada might consider expanding their relationship to include the kids’ site.

As for advertising and revenue sharing, a TVO rep said that those issues are still being worked out “in a way that is consistent with our content strategy.” Release
