Without iTunes Account, iPhone Won’t Work As Promised; AT&T Holding Back Service Details

By Staci D. Kramer - Tue 12 Jun 2007 10:55 PM PST

Apple is intent on making iTunes indispensable beyond media sales and playback. In update emails Tuesday, Apple (full text) and AT&T warned prospective users the expensive phone they lust for won’t meet expectations without an iTunes account. Translation: without a credit card on record, don’t expect much. The application is required for syncing music and video—and, of course, you need it to get an account. True, most of the first-ins probably already have iTunes and are likely to have an iTunes account. (This takes Microsoft’s Passport/Windows Live ID one step further by linking access to a credit card. It would be the equivalent of requiring a Zune or Xbox Marketplace account before activating the abilities of Windows Mobile 6 on a smartphone.) This way, Apple can have a retail relationship outside of AT&T—a vital step, especially for a company for which control is as important as the product itself. When you get to this point, iPhone is beginning to look and sound like an MVNO that isn’t labeled as such.

The email also talks about syncing address lists and the like but it skips some of the important details people usually want to know when they buy a phone including the return policy. An AT&T spokesman I talked to today wouldn’t confirm that the policy will be the same as Cingular/AT&T’s usual 30 days, saying that and most other service-related details aren’t coming before the launch. I asked whether there were plans to separate iTune customer support from other products sold by AT&T. No details. Service plans? No details. You get the picture. He did try to promise clarification about current AT&T customers who are still shy of being able to convert their current account to the required new two-year contract.

DJN: Andy Hargreaves, analyst, Pacific Crest Securities: “ITunes is their broadest distributed product, and they are trying to leverage it any way they can.”

B20: “ ... from a business perspective, this is a smart move on Apple’s part. It would be bad if AT&T were the only company that had a continuing billing relationship with the customer – Apple needs to have some ownership as well. Apple will also be able to send iPhone owners e-mails with special iTunes-related offers, to prompt recurring revenues.”

This is silly. The phone uses iTunes to sync addresses, contacts and music, videos, and to get software updates. It’s free software and I assume it will be in the box with the phone. What is wrong with that? It gives you a good way to organize all the content for the phone. You don’t need to set up an account to use iTunes or to sync an iPod, but I don’t think it is too much to ask to have one so it can hook to your telephone’s account. I mean, the phone company already has your account, right? It’s no big deal.

First I will preface this by saying I will not be getting the iPhone because of AT&T;service and the fact I like separate ipod and pda.  That being said, you do not need to give them dredit card information, you can just give them a paypal account.  Yes, they would have your email through this, but it protects your credit card itself if you do not want to give that out.

I agree I don’t think having to use ITunes is a big deal and obviously if you are going to buy content for the phone you will need an ITunes account.

Also, I don’t think the analogy in this article is correct.  In order to use a lot of the features of a Microsoft Mobile 6 phone you need a version of Microsoft’s operation system installed.  So you can think of ITunes as the operating system for the IPhone like Windows XP is the OS for the Microsoft Mobile 6 phone because the Windows XP aleady comes with a lot of the features that ITunes needs to supply for the IPhone.  Which is very interesting because it sounds like something Google would do which is try to take the Microsoft’s operating system out of the equation.

    Staci,

And you’re suprised by this? How exactly? Steve Jobs himself said on January 9th, 2007 when he announced the iPhone that “It’s the best iPod we’ve ever made”.  iPod’s have required iTunes since the beginning. And if you wanted to purchase any music or videos, it requires an account. How is it possible that the iPhone (best iPod ever) requiring iTunes is news?

"iPod’s have required iTunes since the beginning”. Sure, but not an iTunes account. That’s the difference here. Before, it was possible to have iTunes and use all of its features with your own DRM-free music. Now they want your credit card information… why exactly? Why would you go along with that and not question it?

iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone that allows you to make a call by simply pointing your finger at a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, or a call log

You can also open iTunes accounts from different countries if you buy a gift card from that country. like if you live in the UK, and want to download stuff from the US iTunes store.

I get my gift cards from http://giftcards.buy-proxy.com who are selling cards fro the UK and Spanish stores, but they say they will be selling cards from other stores soon. They also have instructions on how to do it.
