Wal-Mart May Be Looking To Relaunch Its Online Movie Service: Report

By Rafat Ali - Fri 11 Jan 2008 08:00 PM PST

Less than a month after closing its online movie download service, Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) may be looking to start it again, in a different form, reports MCN, citing sources who met Wal-Mart execs at CES earlier this week. Late December, the retail giant shut down its same-day-as-DVD video download service, citing Hewlett Packard’s decision to discontinue the service that powered it.

The story says Wal-Mart execs met with DRM firms to gather information..they were interested in how to allow downloaded movie files to be burned onto discs, for playback on a separate DVD player, something it didn’t offer before. Tough to see how it would succeed against so soon, unless the company radically rethinks its approach to DRM.
