Steve Jobs On iPhone, Cannibals, NBCU

By Staci D. Kramer - Wed 05 Sep 2007 07:32 PM PST

When Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) chairman and CEO Steve Jobs does media he goes all out. The soundbites may get repetitious after a bit but some stand out from this USATinterview:

On iPod touch cannibalizing from iPhone: “If anybody is going to cannibalize us, I want it to be us. I don’t want it to be a competitor.”

On the pricing change: We’re in high-volume manufacturing, and we’re pretty good on the costs side.  We’re also willing to be more aggressive. We think we have a real winner, and customers love the iPhone. The product’s been extremely well accepted; we want to put the pedal to the metal. A holiday season is approaching; we’d have to wait another year for another one.”

On paying early bird premium:: “That’s technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that’s what happens in technology.”

Ed Baig and Jeff Graham also asked him about a line he tossed off during the ringtones announcement—that John Lennon’s “Give Peace A Chance” should ring on his phone when NBC (NYSE: GE) calls—and about the impact of NBC’s non-renewal: “Overall, it’s zero. Music dominates iTunes. In terms of TV shows, NBC supplied us with 30 percent of our TV shows, and we love their content. I hope it works itself out over time.”
