Our Debut World Headquarters

By Rafat Ali - Thu 15 Mar 2007 07:39 AM PST

We finally moved into an office....our own. I have been working out of my house since I started this four and a half years ago (the houses moved from NYC to London to LA and the multiple places within each of those cities). Then as our websites and company expanded, all of our journalists and business people worked virtually, out of their houses. More recently, we had access to two-desks office space through our first COO Jeff Stern.
But now we finally have our own office space: it is a smallish, 2,000 sq. ft office space in Santa Monica, about six blocks up from the beach, close to my home and a couple of blocks from the Google building here. About four of us--including a new COO which I’ll give more details on tomorrow--are in there...so at least 25 percent of our company (total 16) now works out of an office. It feels good to have a base.
Anyway, we are thinking of giving a small office-warming mixer...we could probably fit in 50 or more people in there for a standing room get-together. Will give more details when we figure that out. Meanwhile, if you are interested, it is on 6th and Broadway, a block or so behind Fred Segal. Some more pics of the office here...it is bare, and my room still has nothing except desk/chair/laptop/teamug, but we’ll fill it out as we go along. The wireless is up and working and double redundant: cable modem and DSL as well. We’ve done multiple Ikea and Staples runs, of course.
And yes, we did find the office partially through a posting on our own site...we got an excellent broker through someone who saw the notice and recommended Brian Luft at NAI Capital. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.

Congrats on the new digs.  Also wondering if you have any tips, suggestions, books, websites, etc. for someone—me—who is putting together their first virtual team.  Thanks, Chris

Thanks everyone for your e-mails and comments...I already feel more disciplined workwise in the office.
Chris, on your question, check out http://webworkerdaily.com/, run by my friend Om’s company. nice and gives lots of good tips on a virtual company. We were very Web 1.0...phones, e-mails and IM, but now there are tons of tools available for helping virtual companies.

Did you know you are right across the street from ClickStar’s office?  They’re in 520.
Now you can actually see why that company is such a mess!

Allowing your work to exceed your office space and then building your offices is very admirable.  Thanks for the example, the good reporting, and the morning read.  Congratulations on the group work space.  SP
