Operational Challenges in Managing Digital Media Strategies

By Rafat Ali - Wed 22 Aug 2007 08:28 PM PST

An interesting white paper from KPMG, titled ”The Digital Bubble - Balancing Operational Challenges with Growth”, which focuses on the operational challenges for big media companies buying the fast-growing digital media companies. Here’s the consultant-speak: “The pursuit of a digital strategy is happening so quickly that a digital “bubble” (not unlike the dot.com bubble) could be developing. The bottom line: For leaders who must make increasingly quick decisions in this rapidly changing arena, identification and management of risks, in addition to a full understanding of the business processes behind digital transformation, is critical to successful strategy execution.” Beyond this, some interesting interviews with execs in the industry and a good framework chart (and questions) for operational execution of digital strategies:

It’s an interesting article that isolates the major operational issues media companies face in re-purposing their content on new platforms. I was a little disappointed that they glossed over licensing and rights management. A major bottleneck in getting content cleared for a particular platform is the inefficiency of the backoffice in understanding if they have the necessary rights. For example, in a specific episode of a series there may be dozens of contracts that restrict if this particular slow could be played on a mobile device. Just one piece of music, talent agreement, etc. could cause the show in question to be mis-used. Media companies are struggling to build or buy the appropriate infrastructure to be able to react in real-time to market demand to better understand what is available, when, where, what platform, and what are the obligations for its use.
