NYTimes.com’s Oblique War of Words With WSJ.com

By Rafat Ali - Sat 19 Jul 2008 06:35 PM PST

If Murdoch can publicly talk about his intentions to topple New York Times (NYSE: NYT) in a few months, the NYT’s digital brass can also fire back, if only in a rather amusing internal memo. New York Times online editor Jon Landman and NYTimes.com GM Vivian Schiller had some choice words for WSJ’s new brass, in the memo obtained by NYO, and posted here. “There’s some financial newspaper out there, on Wall Street or maybe in midtown, we aren’t sure. There’s new ownership, it seems, some rich guy who says he wants his paper to be more like ours. So we challenged him to compete head to head with our Thanksgiving Day Topics Page. That was seven months ago. So far, nothing.” The war is over features and sections on each website, and NYT thinks its site is far superior. Hard to argue at this point, but as we know WSJ.com is headed for a relaunch sometime in the next couple of months, and Sapient is working hard putting finishing touches to it. Let’s wait until then…
