Newspaper Roundup: NYTCo, McClatchy Post Higher Online Revenue Gains In February

By David Kaplan - Tue 18 Mar 2008 06:08 AM PST

-- NYTCo: During a month where its now settled battle with activist shareholders heated up over online investments, internet ad revenues for the New York Times Company’s (NYSE: NYT) News Media Group grew 14.4 percent in February. The company attributed the growth to strong display advertising. Total ad revs for the News Media Group decreased 4.1 percent. The About Group, which lost its CEO Scott Meyer last month, posted gains of 20.9 percent. Although positive, the numbers show more signs of The About Group’s slowdown: in January, that group was up 24.7 percent. In contrast, this month the News Media Group experienced a major upswing from January’s relatively small 8.6 percent growth. (Release)

-- McClatchy: Despite reporting more bad news for its February revenue numbers, the Sacramento publisher could at least point to a turnaround in one area: online advertising grew 15.9 percent in February, much higher than the anemic 2.6 percent it reported for January. Meanwhile, consolidated revenues fell 11.7 percent and advertising revenues were down 13.3 percent compared to revenues in February 2007. As it has said for much of the past year, McClatchy’s (NYSE: MNI) Florida and California paper have been struggling against a downturn in those states’ respective real estate markets. Looking specifically at online revs, national internet ads saw the biggest jump, surging 186.7 percent. Online job ads dropped 19.5 percent, while total online classifieds slipped 2.6 percent. All the major news outlets online saw a significant surge in traffic in February - whether it was the Superbowl happening in February this year, of course, the election, and other news - so those increased ad revenues may be a one time blip.
