New York Magazine Buys Restaurants Menu Site Menupages

By Rafat Ali - Thu 10 Jul 2008 02:13 PM PST

imageMenupages, the New York City based online restaurant menu guides site, is being bought out by New York Magazine, we have learned. This is the first such online buy for NYM, which is owned by Wasserstein & Co., the PE firm founded by Bruce Wasserstein…

Menupages, which was founded in 2002, now offers restaurant and take-out menus for eight major U.S. cities: New York to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, the Miami region, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

This buy continues the transformation of NYMag.com, which until its relaunch earlier this year, was a somewhat-sleepy site offering random NYC information and news, besides the magazine’s content. It has since morphed itself into a thriving hub of online info, news and gossip, along with video, blogs, pictures and a lot more. NYM refused comment on the story.

Does this mean menupages is going to suck as bad as NYM now??

“Somewhat-sleepy site?” The redesign was just that—a new look and new nav with some new content, but nearly all the content that garnered NYMag.com two consecutive best website awards from the MPA has been alive and thriving for the past two years. Until recently, NYMag has poured a lot more resources into the web than its peers and had one of the more aggressive internet strategies early on (with a much higher percentage of revenue coming from the web than other magazines, even more impressive given the fact that New York’s ad pages are still climbing versus the industry’s nosedive). For standalone title that doesn’t have the money-wasting abilities of a CondeNet or Time Inc Interactive, it’s done pretty good.
