More on HBO Digital Shakeup: AOL JV Head Leaves; Venture To Stay; No Plans For Hiring More

By Rafat Ali - Wed 20 Jun 2007 12:29 PM PST

Some more info of HBO’s surprise shakeup of its digital team..well, rather completely doing away with the senior management of its digital team. Our sources say HBO has no plans of replacing the top digital executives that have left. The functions would be consolidated within NYC. Mind-boggling to think HBO is pulling back its digital efforts in this day and age. For the company, VOD is the digital holy grail for now, it seems.

Also, we have learned that Steve Stanford, the GM of online comedy joint venture (with AOL) ThisJustIn, has also left. Stanford was previously the founder and CEO of Icebox.com and co-founder and early days COO of Amp’d Mobile. These changes won’t affect the JV for now, though, according to AOL.

Staci adds:  A little more ... as Rafat wrote above, new media is being consolidated in New York but I am told that does not mean a pullback in new media. No comment from HBO—a spokesman said the network doesn’t discuss personnel matters—however, a source familiar with the situation says the structure will be made clearer in the next week or two. Eric Kessler assumed top-line responsibility for new media several months ago; he retained it in the post-Albrecht organization as co-president overseeing the marketing and worldwide distribution of HBO networks and content.

Could someone please explain how Steve Stanford keeps getting jobs? Maybe someone could point out a company that Stanford has actually helped to become successful?

Icebox? (Cratered and left employees high and dry)...Amp’d? (Kicked out)...Voce? (Give. Me. A. Break)...ThisJustIn? (’Nuff said). This guy must give a hell of a great first interview. Good grief.

The comment from “SweetPatty” about Steve Stanford is outrageous. I think if someone is going to post something so libelous they shouldn’t be able to hide behind the cloak of anonymity. But judging by the amount of information “SweetPatty” has about Steve’s career, I’m guessing he is a recently fired and disgruntled employee who spends his days perusing sites like this one looking for overpaid jobs for which he is dramatically underqualified.

How bizzare that a network as advanced as HBO in programming would not have a clue what the future will bring .... are they living in the age of Larry Sanders?  Sorry digital media is here to stay.... sounds like a bunch of overly conservative old people who are scared of rocking the boat by trying new things.  Now that Sopranos is gone, I cancelled my subscription to HBO .... I will get my shows on ITunes! (oh forgot—HBO is not there either)
