Microsoft Rebrands PlaysForSure To ‘Certified For Windows Vista’—Seriously

By Staci D. Kramer - Wed 12 Dec 2007 05:27 PM PST

imageMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has made some good branding moves. This isn’t one. In fact, it may be one of the worst I’ve seen. In some kind of misguided effort to bring Vista to the fore, Microsoft is dumping a known name—PlaysForSure—and symbol that signified interoperability between Windows DRM and devices and worked pretty well as a guide once we got used to it. Instead, we get “Certified for Windows Vista”—which ignores the continued usage of Windows XP by millions and has nothing to do with linking content and devices. It gets even more confusing: as Engadget points out , Zune, which wasn’t designed to work with PlaysForSure, is certified for Vista but not Certified for Windows Vista. I don’t think many will be confused by this and if anything it provides a level of clarification. With “Certified for Windows Vista” the consumer knows this product will work with their new Vista PC.
