MetaWeb Gets $42 Million Second Round For Online Database

By Joseph Weisenthal - Tue 15 Jan 2008 06:26 AM PST

SF-based Metaweb Technologies, the developer of online database Freebase, has raised a $42 million second round from Benchmark Capital and Goldman Sachs, according to VentureBeat. The raise follows an initial $15 million investment in 2006, bringing its total to $57 million. Freebase has grand ambitions of being a complete database of the world’s data, using semantic web technologies to pull out information from stores of unstructured data, such as SEC filings. It’s similar to Wikipedia in that users can edit and contribute data, although it’s organized around facts and numbers, not articles.
