MarketWatch’s New Community/News Sharing Site

By Rafat Ali - Fri 17 Aug 2007 07:27 PM PST

Kinda interesting: a community news sharing and social networking section just launched on MarketWatch, now part of Dow Jones (NYSE: DJ). It links to stories within Marketwatch, allows members to create profiles, tag and share stories, and predict the performance of stocks, among other things. It is basic, and picks on some cues from TheStreet.com’s Stockpickr. Not sure what the ultimate end goal is, and whether this will be extended to WSJ.com.
Update: An interesting comment below, in light of the DJ-IAC JV personal finance community site: “Bet the folks at Marketwatch are launching a pre-emptive strike against corporate cannibalization.  Or maybe with rumors about Murdoch shutting down that venture, maybe the corporate strategy is shifting towards making Marketwatch the community finance center.”

How will this compare to the upcoming IAC-Dow Jones JV, which has been described as a web 2.0 financial services community site? Bet the folks at Marketwatch are launching a pre-emptive strike against corporate cannibalization.  Or maybe with rumors about Murdoch shutting down that venture, maybe the corporate strategy is shiftig towards making Marketwatch the community finance center.  Would make sense that DJ wouldn’t need the additional financing from IAC now that Murdoch is planning on pumping cash in.
