Industry Moves UK: NBCU Global MD Joins BBC, New Media Revenue Focus

By Robert Andrews - Wed 02 May 2007 06:58 AM PST

Nick Betts, NBC Universal’s global channels MD for the UK and Northern Europe, has been appointed head of commercial and business development at BBC Vision, the division responsible for visual output. The government has tasked the BBC with expanding the proportion of its income that comes from private sources and, from the sounds of the announcement, Betts will play a big part in that: “He will be responsible for growing external investment into the BBC public services and developing new business models in a fast changing market place.” Betts’ statement hints at a search for further revenue generation opportunities in digital media: “I’m looking forward to working across the corporation to drive commercial strategy, maximize income from existing commercial sources and develop new revenue streams, particularly from its new media activities.” He previously expanded NBCU’s channel line-up in the low countries, was commercial director at BBC/FlexTech joint venture UKTV and was head of UK and Ireland television for BBC Worldwide.
