HealthCentral Network Buys Consumer Health Info Service MedTrackAlert

By Rafat Ali - Tue 10 Jun 2008 07:59 AM PST

imageHealthCentral Network, the online consumer health info network, has bought out consumer health info company MedTrackAlert. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

MedTrackAlert was started in 2006, and provides prescription drug news for consumers. It does this in the form of a bunch of email newsletters (and online as well) on various topics within the field, and aggregates across these topics. The company is based in NYC, and raised a million dollars in angel funding. One of the co-founders was Ted Smith, who previously was SVP at CNET (NSDQ: CNET), running the B2B side. Smith and other co-founder David Silver will join HealthCentral...Smith becomes VP of Patient Engagement and Marketing. Silver becomes a VP of Business Development.

With this acquisition, MedTrackAlert’s news alerts will be offered in conjunction with HealthCentral’s existing email newsletter offerings, which provide users with everyday healthcare management tools and tips. HealthCentral recently received a big $50 million round of investment from IAC (NSDQ: IACI) and previous investors Sequoia Capital, Carlyle Group and Polaris Venture Partners. More details in release.

Expect a lot more consolidation happening in the consumer health info space...we have been tracking some of it in our health content section: some recent deals: Waterfront Media bought out search marketing company Netramind; Meredith (NYSE: MDP) bought health care marketer Big Communications, and others.
