Health Portal Wars Heating Up: Revolution, Everydayhealth, Google Health, Choice Media

By Rafat Ali - Wed 12 Jul 2006 01:08 PM PST

NYP does something to heat up the already hot summer: the health portal wars. Steve Case-backed health-media and lifestyle company Revolution is planning a consumer health portal, and that’s not a secret. It is slated to launch in October, and he envisions a portal that would allow people to manage their healthcare - handling things like transferring medical records, finding a doctor and scheduling an appointment.

Meanwhile, Waterfront Media, another company backed by Time Warner’s (NYSE: TWX) venture-capital arm, is getting a jump on him by having launched a rival site this month. Everydayhealth.com will be No. 2 to leader WebMD (NSDQ: WBMD) by the end of the year, Waterfront contends.

Elsewhere, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is said to be working on its own health portal and has talked to WebMD, among others, about partnering.

Also, in related news, ChoiceMedia, a health and medical science-focused content company, has launched 25 niche health sites while also rebranding itself late last week as The HealthCentral Network. The firm is led by CEO Christopher Schroeder, formerly head of WPNI. It has built out a variety of new, narrowly-focused content sites, such as MyDiabetesCentral.com and MyDepressionConnection.com.
