Granicus Raises $10 Million For Streaming Government Meetings

By Joseph Weisenthal - Wed 16 Jan 2008 01:18 PM PST

SF-based Granicus, a company that helps governmental organizations stream meetings online, has raised a $10 million first round from JMI Equity. The company’s products allow governments to stream the same meetings that are frequently seen on community cable channels, while incorporating extra data, such as minutes and vote tallies. Granicus was founded in 1999 and claims 400 government customers, including 165 added in 2007. It also says it has been profitable since 2004, with the money going towards sales expansion and product enhancements. Release.

In some cities, there has been controversy about the cost of the company’s systems. See this recent editorial from the Raleigh Chronicle complaining about the amount the city is paying the company.

The Raleigh Chronicle is way off base on their criticism of the streaming fee.  They are comparing downloading a video file (which is much cheaper) to streaming a video file.  There is no good tracking of these downloads and many users would be hesitant to download to their computer.
