Google Analyst Day: Schmidt: ‘MySpace Deal Ahead Of Plans’; May Partner On Spectrum Auction

We’ll have more on Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) analyst day in a bit. As it turned out—totally a coincidence, I’m sure—Google was in the middle of a top execs’ panel when the Microsoft-Facebook call started. Following the session, according to Reuters, CEO Eric Schmidt told reporters, “The MySpace deal is ahead of our plans.” No comment on details or profitability. The video of analyst day—one giant blob for now, not by session—can viewed here.
Spectrum auction: MKTW: Schmidt also told reporters Google might partner on the 700 MHz spectrum auction: “We won’t make our final decision until the last minute. ... The outcome is a platform upon which these new applications can be used in a mobile context, and to us that is the Holy Grail.”
Room for ad growth: FT: Google’s effort to weed out the least relevant messages leaves Google with more unsold search inventory that can be sold to specialized and local advertising.
DoubleClick: Barrons: “Schmidt: ... We don’t control the calendars; not surprised at all about the hubbub. Looks like one of it came from one competitor.”
Not gonna talk GPhone: Also via Barrons: “Schmidt: As you know, I’m on the board at Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), I’m using the iPhone. Certainly not going to talk about a specific product called the GPhone. Very important there be multiple choices at the mobile platform level. Ads on mobile platform will perform better than ads on a non-mobile platform.”
