Google Adopts Universal Search For South Korean Market

By Amanda Natividad - Wed 30 Jan 2008 09:38 PM PST

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has announced it will overhaul its Korean-language search engine in efforts to broaden its appeal in South Korea, according to AP. The country relies mainly on local search engines such as NHN Corp.’s Naver, as some users feel these sites are better adapted to the market because they rely on human interaction rather than software to retrieve results. Google has now adopted a universal search for the country’s market, combining search engine results from other sources, such as online libraries or from its own data. It began utilizing the universal search for its English version last May and since late 2007, rivals such as Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Ask.com started integrating different types of information in their own search results.
