Facebook Working On a Music Platform For Bands; Not iTunes Killer, But MySpace; Apple Tieup

By Rafat Ali - Fri 05 Oct 2007 05:25 PM PST

Facebook is working on an artist platform to be launched later this year, which in essence is supposed to be better than what MySpace allows with its platform, according to multiple sources I have spoken to since this morning after a slightly off-the-mark rumor came out earlier. The platform will allows bands and labels to create artists pages, and allow various widgets to be embedded for music promotion, organizing events, etc. Among those widgets would be iLike, the most popular app inside Facebook, but will also include iTunes widgets for sampling (to being with), and eventually buying music through Apple (NSDQ: AAPL). The service will still have the utilitarian sensibilities of the Facebook platform, the sources stress, rather than the more chaotic and flashy platform that MySpace has.

Facebook has been making the rounds of music labels trying to get this service off the ground.

For now, this squarely takes on MySpace, not iTunes as the rumors said this morning. Facebook will have an actual deal with Apple, though it is conceivable down the line it could start selling music through the artists’ platform.

Whether users will gravitate towards Facebook from an already thriving and deep music community on MySpace is what remains to be seen.

    rafat,

we’ve been filming about 5-10 bands per week for the past month for another site that plans to take on myspace as a tool for musicians to promote themselves, sell music and merchandise, organize fans, tours, etc.

    they launched this week: http://www.woozyfly.com

the general idea is to offer tools that help bands do what they need to do to be successful. so the question is, what tools do bands want, who will provide them, and does the provider have critical mass to actually be helpful.

You know, iLike pretty much does all of that already and there’s a handy Buy it in iTunes link (though I never clicked it so it probably just links directly to the song) as I’d expect any similar app including Apple’s to do).

So why isn’t Apple working with iLike more?

As sebastian mentioned above, maybe apple should see this as an opportunity and work closely with facebook. Facebooks user base and current momentum combined with apples back catalogue and ipod’s popularity can make both companies alot of money.

Purevolume.com is their real competition for the music platform… not Myspace.

I’ve really really tried to get into MySpace, but I really can’t understand why it is/was popular, as it is a mess of a site, and doesn’t seem to add any real social networking.... instead it just seems to be a virtual noticeboard with millions of “add me’s”. I welcome anyone who can take the basic idea of MySpace and actually make it look, and work, alot better, and become a real tool for communication AND a decent noticeboard.

btw http://www.sellaband.com is the new wave of record company, where the fans are in partnership with the musicians.

    Hey Gary.
    Check out http://www.virb.com

Read up on the guys developing it.
    Dig around abit.

I believe it definitely is: “the basic idea of MySpace and actually make it look, and work, alot better, and become a real tool for communication AND a decent noticeboard”

woozy is a little bizy. ILike is limited to Itunes. I love the idea of the widget, in fact I’ve wanted to do it a long time ago. A widget that you can add to any social site, and when clicks shows others what you might belistening to either via playlist or songs that u can actually here partical clips of. Anyone want to help me do it right?

And you’re right gary, myspace is a clusterfuck. sellaband is a great concept but…

the problem is everyone is trying to be everything in the online music biz. and it’s going to be really really difficult to do that.
