Ex-Googlers’ How-To Site Howcast Raises $8 Million First Round

By Joseph Weisenthal - Wed 06 Feb 2008 12:26 PM PST

Another name to add to the list of funded how-to video sites: Howcast, based in NYC and San Francisco, has raised an $8 million first round led by Tudor Investments, along with other investors. The company, which is founded by former Google (NSDQ: GOOG) employees, is looking to offer professionally produced content, but covering ideas suggested by users. So I might, for example, request a video on how I can get my “8” key unstuck. Users are also able to submit videos of their own. It’s an increasingly crowded field, with new entrants coming on every few weeks it seems. Some of the other names: WonderHowTo, MonkeySee, 5Min, VideoJug. To promote itself, howcast has signed distribution agreements with various platforms, including MySpace, YouTube, FiOS TV, Joost and Roo. Release.
