EMI Follows Warner, Makes Deal With Last.fm

By Jimmy Guterman - Wed 28 Feb 2007 09:23 AM PST

EMI may not be able to make good on its sell-music-online-without-DRM threat, but it is making some deals. Following on a similar deal its maybe-suitor Warner Music made with the music social network Last.fm, performers signed to EMI will be available for streaming on Last.fm. EMI Music global head of digital Barney Wragg is quoted in the release, which we haven’t yet found online: “By fusing digital music with the social networking phenomenon, Last.fm have created an easy to use service that allows fans to listen to music that they already love, and find new artists through recommendations from fellow users. The ability to discover music through social interaction on the service, coupled with their seamless integration of opportunities to purchase or subscribe, makes this agreement of huge value to EMI and our artists.”
One by one, step by step, the remaining major labels are entering the online orbit. They’ll have to speed up more if they want to keep pace with their customers, who, as another story today reminds us, are currently running away from them.
