EconSM Panel 3: Hollywood

By Jimmy Guterman - Thu 05 Apr 2007 09:20 PM PST

In our last session before lunch at the EconSM conference on April 26th in LA, we’ll examine how social media is changing Hollywood. As broadband inches toward ubiquity and movie downloads are no longer limited to early adopters, the entrenched players are having to play catch-up. The DVD and cable release windows have become tremendously compressed over the past two years, and simultaneous releases are moving from experiment to accepted behavior. Just yesterday, the Apple-EMI announcement suggests that some forms, at least, of DRM are on the way out. And YouTube is about to get a very well-funded challenge from the “NewCo” consortium. There are rich threats, but social media may represent a rich new market for Hollywood. Can Hollywood dictate mass taste anymore? Can Hollywood retain control over its distributors by giving some away to its customers. Our moderator Staci D. Kramer will examine these provocative issues and more with Ilene Chaiken, executive producer of The L Word and CEO of OurChart; Alan Citron, general manager of TMZ; television personality and producer Carson Daly; David Eun, Google’s top dog for content deals; and George Kliavkoff, who as chief digital officer of NBC Universal will play a big role in steering “NewCo.” They will all have much to say, but don’t forget to bring your questions and your experiences, too.

simply because of their sheer size, the “newco"-youtube-killer app should get a bit of break, but it’s been nearly 2 weeks since this groundbreaking announcement and still no faces or even a name given to this baby.

“clownco” was tossed around, but doesn’t seem fair. it sounds more like what big media would brand an upstart rather than the other way around.

how about if they don’t put up in a very short timeframe you consider “thevaporchannel”???

    that seems fair.
