EconSM Conference Speaker Addition: Carson Daly

By Jimmy Guterman - Tue 20 Feb 2007 09:59 PM PST

imageWe hinted about this last week: today we can announce that Carson Daly will speak at The Economics of Social Media, our first conference, to be held at the Beverly Hilton on April 26. You may know Daly as the host of NBC’s Last Call With Carson Daly (now starting its sixth year) or, previously, as the host and executive producer of MTV’s Total Request Live. He will be on our Hollywood superpanel, along with Ilene Chaiken, executive producer of The L Word, and others.
We invited him because he personifies one of the stories the conference is telling: the merger of traditional media with social media. His production company has been particularly aggressive in signing talent associated with social media (i.e. YouTube phenomenon Brooke Brodack), and he’s been involved in a number of media-blurring endeavors. Those of you who either stay up late (or have a DVR) know that Daly has been a leader in integrating community and Net-savvy performers into his show. This is his language and he is part of the zeitgeist as much as anyone can be within a big media company.
We’re delighted to have him on board.

Carson Daly as a member “as much as anyone can be” of the zeitgeist of social media is a wonderful stretch of hyperbole. Next up, Tara Reid as a symbol of artificial intelligence; Paris Hilton as a thought leader in digital video syndication; and, Britney as...?

Nice turn of phrase but a little carried away ... Unlike many others in entertainment now learning how to embrace social media, Carson has been part of it all along. He’ll bring that experience and more to what promises to be a conversation about the role of social media in today’s entertainment world—and vice versa. Hope you can join us.
