DRM-Free Music Retailer AnywhereCD To Close Down

By Rafat Ali - Mon 24 Sep 2007 09:28 AM PST

So much for bravado: AnywhereCD, the San Diego-based DRM-free digital music retailer headed by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson, is shutting down, after its contract to sell both CD and digital versions of Warner’s music tracks expires, reports SoCalTech. The idea was to allow people to buy both CDs and DRM-free, MP3 versions of the same album through an online store at one price, but the company only able to launch with Warner Music, and other labels had not signed on to try the idea. Even WMG deal as mired in controversy, and the two reached a settlement in June. The amount of settlement probably killed them.
