IOC Grants China’s CCTV.com 2008 Olympic Games Digital Rights

By Amanda Natividad - Wed 19 Dec 2007 08:35 AM PST

State broadcaster China Central Television’s CCTV.com, which already has over-the-air rights for the Beijing Olympics, now has the internet and mobile rights as well. In a decision that mirrors the set-up with NBC Sports, the IOC said combining the various rights “would guarantee full exploitation of the digital broadcast rights over a variety of platforms.” The organization also said it had “considered interest from several companies for the internet and mobile platform broadcast rights.” Richard Carrión, a member of the IOC Executive Board and the TV Rights and New Media Commission, explained in the announcement that fully exploiting the rights was just part of the decision, the IOC also wanted “satisfactory guarantees of anti-piracy and security measures.” (via Reuters.)
