CDN EdgeCast Gets $6 Million From Disney’s Steamboat

By Joseph Weisenthal - Mon 10 Dec 2007 05:24 AM PST

EdgeCast Networks, an LA-based content delivery network (CDN), has raised a $6 million second round led by Steamboat Ventures, Disney’s (NYSE: DIS) VC arm. The startup has now raised more than $10 million, having raised first round money from such investors as Mark Amin, chairman of CinemaNow and Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate films. Though not explicitly stated, the release suggests that EdgeCast’s CDN technology will be employed, to some extent, in the distribution of Disney’s online content. This is Steamboat’s second recent investment in video infrastructure, as it participated in a big $34 million round for Move Networks, a provider of HD streaming technology. Steamboat also recently re-upped its investment in 56.com, a Chinese video sharing site that also has a CDN/infrastructure component to it. The raise comes amid fierce competition in the CDN space; EdgeCast’s claim is that its customers see better performance at a lower price when compared to other CDNs, such as Limelight (NSDQ: LLNW) and Akamai. It intends to use the funds to expand capacity, enhance features and bulk up its sales and marketing staff. Release.
