Broadband Content Bits: Sony-DivX; ABC; ESPN; ACCSelect

By David Kaplan - Mon 14 Jan 2008 11:38 AM PST

-- Sony, DivX pact for online downloads: Studios have resisted DivX (NSDQ: DIVX) software for downloads until now but Sony (NYSE: SNE) Pictures TV finally has given in. Online retailers can offer downloads using DivX encoding and DRM. This could help the company give Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), which rules non-iTunes turf so far, a run for its money—if other deals follow.

-- ABC.com gives Lost HD Treatment: The first three seasons of the drama Lost will be streamed on ABC.com in Hi-Def. Up to now, ABC.com ran a few episodes. And, at the risk of cannibalizing DVD sales, the network’s reasoning behind the move is to remind viewers to tune in on Jan. 31, when the show returns. (Lost Remote)

-- ESPN.com to carry Australian Open live: All 480 hours of the Australian Open tennis tournament will be shown live on ESPN360.com, the company said. Users will be able to choose among action on six courts. Live coverage started Sunday night.

-- ACC Men’s Basketball gets online simulcast: The Atlantic Coast Conference is making all its 34 basketball games this season available live via streaming video in market. Viewers outside of the ACC’s 12-state market will be able to access the games an hour after conclusion. The price breakdown: $4.99, single view; $9.99, monthly; $69.99, annual. Turner Broadcasting manages the broadcasts, while its PlayOn Sports partners with Raycom Sports for production. Release
