Beth Comstock Out At NBCU; Back To GE As SVP, CMO; Changes At NBCU

If the tom-toms keep beating, eventually they’ll be right. It’s official: Beth Comstock is moving back to GE after two-plus years at NBC Universal (NYSE: GE). The move was first reported by the NY Post, which has been predicting Comstock’s return to GE almost since she arrived at NBCU in late 2005 as president of digital media and market development reporting to then chairman and CEO Bob Wright.
NBCU denied reports of such a move in September, and, just we were starting an interview at CES in early January, Comstock told an investor that she was not going back to GE.
Her role shifted to president of integrated media in February 2007, when Jeff Zucker shook things up after his ascension to CEO. She was responsible for digital, marketing and research; that included iVillage, the $600 million acquisition that was her first big digital move. The digital theme continues on her return to GE, where she’ll be responsible for marketing, sales and communications as well as “cross-business digital initiatives, focusing initially on consumer health; and establishing a network of external partners to extend GE’s leadership in environmental technologies.”
Comstock’s new job is effective March 10. She’ll report to GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt, who, of course, talked her up in the announcement: “Under Beth’s leadership NBCU created industry-leading advertising innovations for customers, will reach its $1 billion goal for digital revenues in 2008 – a year ahead of schedule, and, in partnership with News Corporation (NYSE: NWS), developed the premium video service hulu. I want her to use the same approach to drive digital excellence across GE. She also will explore technology and funding partnerships to bring new innovations to market using GE’s distribution channels, reach and brand.”
Changes at NBCU: Comstock will continue to be involved at NBCU; the details are a little murky but it’s related to the health initiatives mentioned above. Chief Digital Officer George Kliavkoff will report to Salil Mehta, the Disney (NYSE: DIS) vet recently appointed as president of business operations, strategy and development.
More to come.
