@ Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder Meeting; With Buffett, Gates, Decker And 30,000 Others

By Joseph Weisenthal - Fri 02 May 2008 09:32 PM PST

Omaha Machine & Supply Co.It’s about as far away from the big digital media hubs as you can get, but I’m hanging out in Omaha, Nebraska this weekend for Berkshire Hathaway’s famous annual shareholder meeting held every year at the Qwest Center. According to reports, about 30,000 people (a record) are expected to descend, hoping to hear Warren Buffett (and his sidekick Charlie Munger) discuss the economy and the state of the business. Even though Bill Gates and Sue Decker are on Berkshire Hathaway’s board, I don’t expect much digital media talk. But for Buffett, who has long spoken out against practices in the financial industry, including the use of complex, difficult-to-value derivatives, recent activity represents a teachable moment. So there’ll be plenty of talk on that, as well as Justin brand cowboy boots, Dairy Queen ice cream and the Nebraska Furniture Mart, which sells “The Warren” (incidentally I am actually in the market for a new mattress, so I’m interested). And if there is any news relevant to paidContent readers, you can find it here.

Anyway, if anyone happens to be in town, feel free to shoot me a message at joseph (at) paidcontent (dot) org. Ditto if there are any digital media startups in Omaha that I should know about—let’s meet up.

A real journalist would have to ask the only obvious question of Sue Decker: How can a person that has such a troubled tenure at Yahoo end up on the board of Berkshire Hathaway? If you cannot create shareholder value at Yahoo how do you expect to help Mr. Buffett’s shareholders?

I’m anxious to hear how this goes.
