Updated: AOL Buys Online Profile Manager SocialThing

By David Kaplan - Fri 15 Aug 2008 10:21 AM PST

AOL (NYSE: TWX) has confirmed that it has acquired social net working tool Socialthing. Terms were not disclosed. The company is going to be part of its People Networks business unit, which AOL created in May after its $850 million purchase of Bebo. News.com’s Caroline McCarthy says that SocialThing picked a good time to sell, as the expansion of Facebook’s mini-feed importer could make growth tougher for independent aggregator services like Socialthing.

Original post: AOL has bought Socialthing, a company the offers to help manage users online identities, according to Techcrunch. The Boulder, CO.-based company raised $300K of a planned $500K back in October and has been in beta since last year as well. Terms of the deal weren’t revealed. In March, AOL expanded its web mail service to include tighter integration with its AIM messaging tools. The purchase of Socialthing is likely tied to efforts to make services like AIM more portable.
